Rupa* was rescued at a bus stop after being gang-raped and beaten with a stone. A women’s shelter in South India took her in, and through regular therapy sessions and psychiatric medication, she began to address the trauma she had endured and find stability. While she demonstrated notable emotional and mental improvement, the beating she endured left her in need of surgery and ongoing care. The shelter arranged for weekly sessions with a volunteer physiotherapist, through which she slowly regained strength following an operation. Despite her physical struggle, Rupa began pursuing a creative outlet in jewelry-making through the shelter’s skills-training initiative. She demonstrated an eager willingness to learn and was thrilled to draw in some pocket cash by selling the accessories she produced.

Though Rupa’s high-profile case underscores the need for women’s safety and rights, with the shelter’s help, she found emotional, mental, and physical healing, and was able to step out of her brokenness as she gained newfound self-confidence and value.
